Quick guide to the coves: how to get to Cala Bassa and Cala Comte by water taxi (without a car or parking)

Water taxi carrying passengers across the water in Ibiza

There are two types of people in Ibiza. Those who’ve spent half the morning looking for a parking space in Cala Bassa under the blazing sun. And those who’re already in the water.

This guide is for the latter.

Water taxi: The secret that regular visitors already know

From the port of San Antonio, literally a 5-minute walk from The Red Hotel and The Blue Apartments, water taxis depart daily, connecting you to the best coves in the west of the island: Cala Bassa, Cala Comte (also known as Cala Conta) and Port des Torrent. No car, no sat-nav, no getting lost.

How much does it cost and when do they leave?

The boats operate from 9.30 am until 9.30 pm, with departures every 30 minutes until mid-afternoon, when they switch to hourly departures. The price is around €3–4 one way on the bay water taxis, whilst Ulises Cat’s services to Cala Bassa or Cala Conta cost between €8 and €9 per adult for a return trip.

Why is travelling by sea the better option?

Because the journey itself is part of the experience. You set off from the harbour with the wind in your face, see the coastline from the sea, and arrive at the cove having enjoyed the journey. It’s not the same as parking in a gravel car park and getting out of the car covered in sweat.

What’s more, the water taxi is a genuine alternative for avoiding the traffic jams and crowds that are so common in Ibiza during the high season. In July and August, the road to Cala Bassa can get seriously congested. The sea, on the other hand, doesn’t.

Cala Bassa vs. Cala Comte: which to choose?

Cala Bassa is more spacious, has a beach bar and turquoise waters sheltered by pine trees. Ideal if you want to spend the day in comfort without having to search for shade.

Cala Comte (Cala Conta) is more visually spectacular: several small coves, rocky seabeds and some of the best views on the island of the Ses Illetes islets. It gets busier in the late afternoon, but it’s well worth it.

If you have to choose one: Cala Bassa for the whole day, Cala Comte to arrive in the mid-afternoon and stay to watch the sunset from the water.

Before you set off, make a note of this

  • Take cash with you or check whether they accept cards before boarding
  • Set off early: the first boats of the morning are the least crowded
  • Apply sun cream straight away – the sun beats down on the boat without warning
  • The last return boat leaves at around 9.30 pm – don’t miss it
